Project Overview
This project involved the safe removal of an existing height restriction entrance barrier at the Makro site in Cribbs Causeway, Bristol, and its relocation to a more suitable position within the premises. The works also included drilling new fixing points and securing the barrier using anchor resin and fixing bolts to ensure long-term stability and safety.
Objectives
• Remove the existing height restriction barrier without causing damage to surrounding infrastructure
• Relocate and reinstall the barrier in a more effective location
• Ensure secure and durable fixing using appropriate anchoring methods
• Minimise disruption to site operations during the works
Scope of Work
1. Site Assessment and Preparation
• Conducted a pre-work inspection to assess the existing barrier condition and mounting system
• Identified new installation location to improve traffic flow and safety
• Marked out new fixing points in accordance with barrier dimensions
2. Removal of Existing Barrier
• Isolated the work area to ensure safety of staff and vehicles
• Carefully removed fixing bolts and dismantled the barrier
• Lifted and transported the barrier components to the new location
3. Installation at New Location
• Drilled new fixing holes into the concrete substrate using appropriate drilling equipment
• Cleaned holes to remove dust and debris to ensure proper adhesion
• Injected anchor resin into each drilled hole
4. Securing the Barrier
• Installed new fixing bolts into resin-filled holes
• Positioned and aligned the barrier correctly
• Allowed sufficient curing time for the anchor resin to achieve full strength
• Tightened all fixings to specified torque settings
Health & Safety Considerations
• Work area was cordoned off to prevent unauthorised access
• Operatives wore appropriate PPE including gloves, eye protection, and safety boots
• Dust control measures were implemented during drilling
• Manual handling risks were mitigated using proper lifting techniques
Challenges and Solutions
• Challenge: Maintaining site access during works
Solution: Scheduled work during low-traffic periods and used temporary barriers
• Challenge: Ensuring strong fixing in existing concrete
Solution: Used high-quality anchor resin and ensured correct hole preparation
Outcome
The height restriction barrier was successfully removed and relocated with minimal disruption to site operations. The new installation provides improved traffic management and enhanced safety. The use of anchor resin ensured a robust and durable fixing, meeting all operational requirements.
Conclusion
This project demonstrated an efficient and safe approach to barrier relocation, combining careful planning, proper installation techniques, and adherence to safety standards. The completed works have improved site functionality and ensured long-term reliability of the barrier system.
