Meet Account Manager Danny

We’re pleased to introduce Danny Snelling, one of our account managers at Greenway. We caught up with Danny to learn more about his role and experience as part of the team:

Hey Danny, can you tell us a bit about your career at Greenway?

Certainly! I’ve been with Greenway since June 2020, and I’ve loved every minute of my time here. When starting, the directors gave so much support and welcomed my ideas on how I envisaged things working.

Since joining, the business has gone through a few changes, and it’s been great watching it grow into the company it is today. Everyone who works at Greenway brings different strengths and ideas, it’s a great culture to work in!

What does a typical day look like for you?

Coffee is first on the agenda! I have two young kids so this is a must even before I start work!

I usually spend my mornings dealing with client queries that come in either via phone or email and catching up with the office team on day-to-day business.

Sometimes I’ll go out on a site visit to see a client and I regularly like to check in with our engineers to see how jobs are progressing.

Other responsibilities include preparing and submitting quotations for jobs, reviewing reports and invoicing.

What do you like most about working for Greenway?

I love working in a fast-paced environment and that no two days are the same. Of course there are challenges –  it’s always interesting when we get a call about a power or heating issue or major leak that needs addressing without delay at 4.45pm.

But that’s where having a dependable team at hand is so critical, we wouldn’t be able to deliver for our clients without the brilliant team we have in place who are 100% reliable.  

How do you feel supported in your role and how does Greenway help you further your career?

 I know that I can call the directors whenever required for assistance or support.

Greenway is currently helping me to further my career in the facilities management industry; whereas I used to only manage electrical jobs (as this is my trade) I am now managing gas, plumbing and fabric works as an Account manager.

As a facilities company, Greenway has a wide scope of different trade jobs and with the help of other colleagues, I am hoping to build my knowledge.

What makes Greenway a great place to work?

We constantly encourage people within the team to talk. Whether this is talking about ways of working or career progression, everyone is open and ready to listen. We take employee feedback onboard and try and work together to solve problems or improve work, always ready to try new things and to experiment with different approaches.

What is the company culture like?

Our employees are very committed and will go above and beyond to help one another. Our challenges are shared between us. This could be in the form of an engineer picking up an extra job on the way home to save the on-call engineer extra travel, or office members staying to deal with high-priority work in order to ensure the client is satisfied. We work together to ensure we deliver for our customers and that hard work is recognised and rewarded.

How would you describe the working environment?

We have a positive, hardworking, and adaptive working environment. It’s no secret that facilities management is a demanding industry, and when a problem arises, it can have massive ramifications for our clients. We therefore ensure that our employees are well cared for, and mental wellbeing is prioritised. For example, our holiday allowance is above average for the industry, to ensure our team have a well-earned break.

Can you describe three benefits of working for Greenway?

Tell us a bit more about career development at Greenway?

We hold annual reviews for every team member and set out objectives to help them improve and develop. This ensures we’re keeping up to date with new skills, while helping our team progress. For example, we allow engineers to shadow members of the management team to grow their confidence and skills, learning how they can move onto the next stage of their career.

Can you tell us about Greenway’s apprenticeship opportunities?

So far, we have taken on two apprentices this academic year and we have a variety of adult apprentices and trainees within our regional teams. As a company, we strongly believe that we have a responsibility to train the next generation of engineers and managers to ensure the ongoing skill shortage within our sector is closed and doesn’t affect Greenway or our clients. We believe the biggest factor in success is passion and desire, and everything else can be taught.

Coffee with Steve Green: Greenway’s commitments to a greener future

Sustainability is a key priority for us at Greenway. We’re always trying to improve the ways we work to become more sustainable as a business, both now and in the long term.

Recently, we sat down with our managing director, Steve Green about how we plan on meeting our sustainability goals.

What actions is Greenway taking to become a more sustainable business?

When a customer requires a callout, we make sure the engineer with the correct skills attends to reduce the number of return visits we need to make. Not only does this cut the amount of time the work takes, but also reduces our emissions from being out on the road.

We’re keen to embrace new technology for our clients. This is why we’ve been introducing solar and heat pump technologies to ensure that we are meeting our client’s requirements.

When it comes to keeping things eco-friendly in our office, we use sustainable materials and supplies. We’ve also gotten into the habit of composting our teabags and coffee grounds – the whole team’s in on it! Whenever we can, we give away our equipment and furniture to charities. This means that people who need them most can get use out of the items and less waste goes to landfill.

We’ve also given our management team the freedom of hybrid working. It’s a win-win because it cuts down on those pesky CO2 emissions from commuting via car, and we’re all about keeping travel to a minimum when we can.

What are Greenway’s sustainability business goals in the short, medium, and long term?

For now, we’re encouraging our clients to choose repairs where possible to minimise the waste involved with replacements. Whether it’s reusing old roof tiles during big renovations, swapping out thermos cutouts instead of the whole water boiler, or just giving fittings a makeover instead of replacing them.

Looking a bit further down the road, we’re open to talking to clients to help them save energy in the long run by introducing LED lighting, improving insulation to be more efficient, and going electric for heating and hot water instead of gas.

Can you tell us about your electric car charger’s installation?

Recently, we’ve invested in training for our electrical team so they can design, install, and maintain EV chargers for our customers. As a result, we have carried out numerous car charger installations at commercial properties.

We have also introduced electrical vehicles to our fleet to work towards our vision of having an entire fleet of electric vehicles by 2026. This will allow us to drastically cut down our emissions and lead to a Greener(way) future.

Coffee chats: Celebrating Greenway’s successes with managing director, Steve Green

We’ve got a lot to celebrate here at Greenway. Coming up to our 6th anniversary, we’re working with some of the UK’s most well-known high street brands and continuing to build an enviable team of engineers. This week, we took five with our managing director, Steve Green, to talk about building the business, plans for the future, and why satisfied colleagues and customers lead to a good night’s sleep! Steve is an expert in his craft, with over five years of experience running a successful business, following an established career in facilities engineering. Here’s what he had to say.  

What inspired you to start Greenway? 

After working in a variety of organisations, which all had their strengths and weaknesses, I could see the opportunity to create a different kind of facilities management business. It felt like the right time to use my experience and skills to create a business of my own. 

How has the business evolved since the pandemic? 

The pandemic was a pivotal period for Greenway. It came with its challenges, however, the company’s resilience shone through. Without our strong customer base, we would not be where we are today, as our customers dictate our success. Our portfolio has grown, and we’ve been introduced to larger, more established brands that have given us larger projects. 

We now travel further afield to deliver our services, and due to this, the business has grown to meet demand. We’re now one of the fastest growing facilities management providers in the UK. 

To support the growth of the business, we have invested in relevant industry qualifications, such as renewing our SafeContractor status and Construction Line Gold to demonstrate our commitment to high standard, after having a thorough assessment of our health and safety practices across the business. 

What has been your biggest achievement so far? 

Definitely having a happy and retained team! While being attentive to our clients, we prioritise having a healthy, well-recognised team. We’re glad that our team can be themselves within the positive working environment that we have cultivated. 

What does your average working day look like? 

It varies. Typically, I start every morning with a team huddle. This allows us to review incoming jobs and activities and evaluate reactive maintenance jobs, such as leaks, from the night before. 

Getting the business together means we can support and reprioritise jobs where needed.   

Being managing director means I have a very diverse mix of jobs that constantly need prioritising. I usually manage phone calls while I walk my dog, and I pick up engineer issues when needed to support the team to deliver our services in a timely way. 

What keeps you awake at night? 

I always try to go to sleep knowing my colleagues and customers are satisfied and happy. I like to know that my team are cared for and motivated when completing their work; it gives me a sense of fulfilment. I also like to ensure that no one has been lost along the journey, and I make sure my engineers feel appreciated and welcome. 

What are you most proud of about your team?  

Our team of engineers are outgoing, and they’re always engaging in ways to develop their skills when working with customers. They are dedicated to improving our customers’ experience and it’s great to see that pride in delivering great work ripple through the entire business. 

You’ve recently moved into a bigger office space, how will the office move benefit Greenway?  

We definitely prefer the new office! It is a bigger space, and it has windows! We have a lot of new desks and equipment. Location wise, it is much better, as we have motorway access so can get on the road to see clients quickly and easily. 

What are your future plans for Greenway? 

I want to continue to grow the business, building our customer base across the UK. A big priority for us is ensuring that our environmental impact decreases over the coming months and years. A commitment we’re already making progress on reducing our carbon impact through use of electric vehicles, with plans in place to increase our electric vehicle fleet in the future. 

What do you enjoy doing outside of work? 

I enjoy travelling and going on holiday. I have a big passion for gardening and I’m restoring my house in my free time. And of course I’m quite partial to the odd pint at my local!

Meet the Team: Sam Palmer

We’re pleased to introduce Sam Palmer, one of our Electrical Apprentices, who has been with Greenway for the past year.

Sam is currently working towards a Level 3 apprenticeship qualification, studying at City of Bristol College one day each week, alongside working here at Greenway the rest of the week.

We caught up with Sam about his role and experience as part of the team:

Why did you decide to apply to Greenway?

Since I was about 10, I knew I wanted to become an electrician. My dad was an electrician at this time, so I became inspired by him. My dad knows Steve, our MD, so I had that connection too!

How has Greenway supported you in your career aspirations?

At Greenway, someone is always there to support me when I need help. I work with a team of electrical engineers who bring a breath of knowledge and skills to the business. It’s exciting to see the variety of career paths ahead of me!

What do you enjoy the most about working at Greenway?

I enjoy getting involved in a variety of different projects. No two days are the same. I do a lot of installation and testing work, which I really enjoy. I find installation the most interesting, as it’s the most challenging, and I like being able to overcome those challenges.

What opportunities has Greenway provided you with?

I have been able to improve my social skills as I constantly work with a team of people. I have also done a lot of team building.

I’ve properly developed my electrical skills for my apprenticeship, and alongside this, I have completed a lot of health and safety training.

Setting up for further business growth in 2023

2022 has been a great year here at Greenway and our business growth. We’ve taken on a large number of new clients and grown the team significantly as a result. With the business growing at pace, we’ve created a dedicated account management team to look after specific clients, liaising directly to ensure all project briefs are delivered efficiently, accurately and on time.

Our new team includes 3 Account Managers to oversee various client accounts, 1 Major Project Manager to oversee high-value projects and 1 Small Works Manager, tasked with overseeing smaller, yet equally vital projects.

Steven Green, Founder and Managing Director of Greenway Facilities Services comments, “Our business is expanding rapidly with exciting new clients coming on board. We need to ensure that we can service them efficiently and see the account management team as a welcome addition to our existing structure. Facilities Management: Brixham Project

Why Greenway was called in: This was a facilities management project to convert an old high street bank building into a banking hub. In the current economic climate, more people are looking for financial consultancy. However, fewer people are attending their local bank branches. This means that for many banking companies, it is inefficient to have permanent branches open in certain locations. So, this banking hub will house different UK banks for temporary periods, keeping banking accessible for everyone, but saving companies from having redundant branches open.  

 

Our work: This is a particularly big job for us as we are responsible for the whole project, from electrics and air conditioning to ceilings and partitions.  The project will take a whole team of Greenway experts to ensure that all aspects are finished to the highest standard. We’re especially excited about this project as it is the perfect example of the end-to-end solution Greenway can provide.  

 

The result: We have been given 7 weeks to complete our work and once this facilities management project is complete, we may be called in to construct more banking hubs. We’re proud to announce that we’re not just on track but are ahead of our programme!

Major project begins for high street bank

Our expert team of surveyors and engineers has just begun a major project for a leading high street bank in Newport, Wales. Major repairs and restoration to the front and rear of a Grade II listed building, dating back to the 1890s, is being undertaken.

The scope of the works includes roof works, stonework repairs, stonework clean, refurbishment of over 100 sash windows, replacement lead gutters, rendering repairs and rear external decoration works. The project is estimated to take 14 weeks.
